Mysterious crypt of bones (semiprivate)
Unknown to most visitors, this secret crypt of Capuchin monks is a bone cemetery in the underground area of the Church and is a perfect place to visit for Halloween!
When the Capuchin friars in 16th century moved from another monastery here, they broth with them the bones of their departed brothers and decided, for unknown reason to not rebury them but to create this bizarre place.
The ossuary itself is comprised of five rooms, covered with the soil from Jerusalem and decorated with the bones of 4,000 friars, arranged in intricate patterns along the walls and ceilings in the small area under the church itself.
The larger bones were arranged by type, creating a Pelvis room, a Leg and thigh bone room and a Room of skulls. Smaller bones became floral and geometric designs, wall clocks and chandeliers. In some rooms, intact skeletons were propped upright and covered with musty robes, and some of them are embalmed as warning.
The mysterious message, left to the future generations, is written on the wall of the crypt:
“What you are now, we once were; what we are now, you shall be.”
Come with respect, don’t disturb the death Moncks, something could happen!
